Advanced Search Instructions

In addition to a simple keyword search, we also offer a very robust advanced search capability to greatly refine the results of your search.

The Simple Search is displayed in the menu area, and it is also the first field (Enter your keywords) on the Advanced Search page. You can enter any kind of information in this box (but the string must contain at least three (3) characters to return results. Then click the magnifying glass to process your search.

To refine your search, you will see several fields below the search box.

Containing any of the words

You can type a string in this area, and it will append it to whatever you have in the Enter your keywords box. If the Enter your keywords box is empty, it will search only for the string you have entered in the Containing any of the words box. The search will find every page with any of the words you just typed in. For example, if you type in Foreign Protestants William it will return every page that contains ANY of these words.

Containing the phrase

This is the box to use if you are looking for a specific group of words. For example, if you type in Foreign Protestants William it will only return the pages that contain THESE WORDS IN THIS ORDER.

Containing none of the words

Use this feature if you want to exclude any pages with specific words. For example, if you type in Foreign Protestants William it will only return the pages that DO NOT contain THESE WORDS.

If you select anything in the column Only of the type(s) your search results will be limited to just that type of content.

  • Remember to make sure you have cleared the search box (either reload the page or delete the contents of the box(es)) before performing a new search.
